SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY ARTS DISTRICT
MAIN STAGE THEATRE
San Diego, California
The Main Stage theatre, originally built in 1967 as the Don Powell Theatre, is a proscenium theatre used by the School of Theatre, Television, & Film as their primary performance space. Additionally, the space was used to host performances by the music department.
In dire need of a renovation to bring it up to current ADA, and technical theatre standards,, the technical upgrades included the redesign of the theatre seating and sightlines, new lighting positions, motorized rigging above the forestage, and a new performance lighting dimming, switching, and control system.
San Diego State envisioned not only upgrading the Main Stage, but the creation or perhaps completion of a "performing arts district", adding a new flexible studio space, named the Conrad Prebys Theatre, and a new amenities building, to house their box office, as well as additional restrooms.
TheatreDNA provided full theatre planning, theatre design, and performance equipment design and specification services.
